A poor first half showing from Gillingham saw them easily beaten by AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow on Saturday.

Two goals in two minutes from Christian Jolley along with one from Jack Midson saw the home side three goals to the good with just 22 minutes on the clock.

Gillingham did pull one back through Charlie Lee with twenty minutes to go, but it wasn’t enough and the visitors went home disappointed.

Andy Hessenthaler kept faith with the same starting eleven that beat Burton Albion just seven days earlier with new loan signing Jo Kuffour having to be content with starting on the bench.

The Wombles had kept their same side that beat Bradford City a week ago, although they were forced into an early change with Gareth Gwillim limping off after just four minutes.

The change seemed to have little effect on Terry Brown’s side who showed why they have had such a great start to the season.

With ten minutes on the clock the home side were in front when a long ball up top bounced past the outstrectched Matt Lawrence and into the path of Jolley who made no mistake slamming the ball past Ross Flitney.

If that wasn’t bad enough, it was 2-0 just minutes later whe the striker met Sammy Hatton’s cross at the near post to head home.

Reeling from the two goals, Gillingham tried to rally before really shooting themselves in the foot. Chris Whelpdale’s ball on the edge of his own area to Garry Richards was played straight into the path of Jack Midson by the central defender and the Wombles made no mistake from eight yards out.

Having seen enough, Hessenthaler made a tactical change on just 36 minutes withdrawing Matt Lawrence, bringing on Curtis Weston in his place with Danny Jackman reverting to left back and Andy Frampton moving alongside Richards.

The change in shape paid off as the Gills got a bit of a hold on proceedings, with Jackman trying his luck from distance late on in the half.

With a flea in their ears, Gillingham showed that they could get back into the game if they really wanted to and Danny Kedwell spurned a great chance against his former side heading over after being teed up by Frank Nouble.

They finally got a goal back on 67 minutes when Weston laid the ball into the path of Charlie Lee who set himself before firing the ball into the top left corner.

By that point, Kuffour had come on for his Gills debut and the Bristol Rovers striker had chances to score along with Kedwell and Luke Rooney, but it wasn’t to be and the visitors went home pointless.

In fairness, based on their first half performance, Gillingham would have been rather fortunate to have left South London with anything other than their tails between their legs.

Saturday’s defeat sees Gillingham drop to ninth in League Two and next up is the visit of Barnet in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night.
